Circus and the avant-gardes : history, imaginary, innovation

Jürgens, Anna-Sophie ; Hildbrand, Mirjam
London : Routledge, 2021

This book examines how circus and circus imaginary have shaped the historical avant-gardes at the beginning of the 20th century and the cultures they help constitute, to what extent this is a mutual shaping, and why this is still relevant today.

This book aims to produce a better sense of the artistic work and cultural achievements that have emerged from the interplay of circus and avant-garde artists and projects, and to clarify both their transhistorical and trans-medial presence, and their scope for interdisciplinary expansion. Across 14 chapters written by leading scholars – from fields as varied as circus, theatre and performance studies, art, media studies, film and cultural history – some of which are written together with performers and circus practitioners, the book examines to what extent circus and avant-garde connections contribute to a better understanding of early 20th century artistic movements and their enduring legacy, of the history of popular entertainment, and the cultural relevance of circus arts. Circus and the Avant-Gardes elucidates how the realm of the circus as a model, or rather a blueprint for modernist experiment, innovation and (re)negotiation of bodies, has become fully integrated in our ways of perceiving avant-gardes today.

The book does not only map the significance of circus/avant-garde phenomena for the past, but, through an exploration of their contemporary actualisations (in different media), also carves out their achievements, relevance, and impact, both cultural and aesthetic, on the present time.

Female aerialists in the 1920s and early 1930s : femininity, celebrity, and glamour

Holmes, Kate
New York : Routledge, 2021

Female solo aerialists of the 1920s and early 1930s were internationally popular performers in the largest live mass entertainment of the period in the UK and USA. Yet these aerialists and this period in circus history have been largely forgotten despite the iconic image of ‘the’ female aerialist still flaring in the popular imagination.

Kate Holmes uses insights gained as a practitioner to reconstruct in detail the British and American performances and public personae of key stars such as Lillian Leitzel, Luisita Leers, and the Flying Codonas, revealing what is performed and implicit in today’s practice. Using a wealth of original sources, this book considers the forgotten stars whose legacy of the cultural image of the female aerialist echoes. Locating performers within wider cultural histories of sport, glamour, and gender, this book asks important questions about their stardom, including: why were female aerialists so alluring when their muscularity challenged conservative ideals of femininity and how did they participate in change? What was it about their movements and the spaces they performed in that activated such strong audience responses?

This book is vital reading for students and practitioners of aerial performance, circus, gender, popular performance, and performance studies.

Aerial acrobatics & calisthenics, vol. 1 : mini book 1 dynamics

Tramullas Gentet, Gabriel
United States : The aerial movement, 2020

The Aerial Movement® AERIAL ACROBATICS & CALISTHENICS VOLUME 1 (MINI BOOK 1 DYNAMICS) is a new systematic approach for aerial training that includes theory, practice, and a unique methodology that combines biomechanics, programmed training, technique, conditioning, and preparatory exercises. Focused on the progression, development and execution of dynamic, explosive, and slow motion movements in aerial acrobatics and aerial calisthenics, this manual was created as the result of a detailed movement analysis. Through this analysis, every movement was broken down to its basic components, like the “links” that form a long “chain”. The aim of the manual is to work gradually and methodically in order to feel and understand the key movements in aerial acrobatics and aerial calisthenics. There are many paths that lead to the same destination; The Aerial Movement’s Volume 1 is just one of them. Some of the topics presented in this manual have been summarized from scientific publications, and were selected based on their effectiveness in helping students attain their aerial acrobatics and aerial calisthenics goals. Whether we are circus artists, aerial acrobats or calisthenics enthusiasts, or consider ourselves professionals or amateurs, at this level, we are all athletes. While all precautions have been taken in the preparation of this manual, the author assumes no responsibility for errors or omissions, or for problems or damages resulting directly or indirectly caused or allegedly caused by the use of the information contained in this manual.

Applied anatomy of aerial arts : an illustrated guide to strength, flexibility, training, and injury prevention

Scherb, Emily
Berkeley, CA : North Atlantic Books, 2018

Specifically designed for aerialists—including those who do trapeze, silks, and other aerial arts— Applied Anatomy of Aerial Arts is an invaluable resource for those who want to optimize their performance and train safely.

Using a biomechanical and movement-based approach, Emily Scherb, a physical therapist who specializes in the care, treatment, and education of circus performers—explains the anatomical rationale for progressions of learning and demonstrates simple movements to achieve the coordination, muscular control, strength, and fitness to hang with correct form, how to progress from hanging into a pull up, an inversion, and beyond with a strong center, precise muscle sequencing, and ease of movement.

Aerialists will learn how bones, joints, muscles, and soft tissues allow for specific movements and gain an appreciation for concepts of proximal stability.

This full-color illustrated guide lays a solid foundation for beginners and advanced students with a wealth of insights into their own performance as well as refreshers on fundamentals in warm ups and conditioning. It explains how to structure a training session, how to care for injuries, and best practices for basic self first aid. [editor summary]

The circus : a visual history

Jacob, Pascal
London, New York : Bloomsbury Visual , 2018

This beautiful book charts the development of the circus as an art form around the world, from antiquity to the present day.

Using over 200 circus related artworks from the French National Library's private collections, celebrated cultural historian Pascal Jacob tells the story of travelling entertainers and their art and trade. From nomadic animal tamers of the Dark Ages to European jugglers and acrobats of the 1800s, from the use of the circus as Soviet propaganda to the 20th-century Chinese performance art renaissance, this is an exhaustive history with a uniquely international scope.

Jacob draws on both rare and famous artworks, including prints dating from the 13th century, and paintings by Picasso and Doré. In doing so he demonstrates the circus to be a visual and physical masterpiece, constantly moving and evolving, and just as exciting an experience for audiences now as it was 1,000 years ago.

32 aerial projects to make at home

Santos, Steven
Newton, MA : Simply Circus, 2017

As I look back at the last 15 years, one of the things that stands out to me is how much my capabilities have grown every time I learned to build another piece of my own equipment. From building that first pair of wooden stilts to designing complex apparatus, each time I learned to build a new piece of my own equipment has been a major step in developing new capabilities. But it’s not just my capabilities that have grown. The growth I have seen in the middle and high school aged students that have learned to build their own equipment has been equally amazing to me. This book offers step-by-step instructions for building 32 safe aerial projects at home. [editor summary]

Une histoire du cirque

Jacob, Pascal

Verticality, weight and gravity : reflections on the concept of verticality, weight and gravity in circus arts' professional teaching : static trapeze, chinese pole, rope and tissue : pedagogical guide

FEDEC - Fédération Européenne des Écoles de Cirque Professionnels ; Dumont, Agathe
Bruxelles : FEDEC, 2015

The INTENTS “Verticality, weight and gravity” session suggests a cross-disciplinary approach. By combining the expertise of teachers and speakers from many different countries, schools and backgrounds, the objective is to share skills, reflect together and ask questions about how to act. Taking their experience in the field as a starting point, the four speakers– Roberto Magro (La Central del Circ, Barcelona, Spain), Clare Anderson (National Centre for Circus Arts, London, United Kingdom), Marie-Céline Daubagna (Le Lido, Toulouse, France) and Chloé Moglia (artist and artistic director of the company Rhizome) – suggested approaching the concepts of verticality, gravity and weight in the language of aerial disciplines starting from their own individual experiences. The idea was to recommend tools and avenues for reflection and then experiment on the body, in the specific place where they are conveyed to each individual person. This manual takes into account their experience as well as the testimonials of the teachers that attended the continuing professional development course led by educational coordinator, Anne Morin.
