Circus education in Québec : balancing academic and kinaesthetic learning objectives through an artistic lens

Funk, Alisan
Montréal : Concordia University, 2017

With this research, I investigate the coexistence of academic and kinaesthetic curricular goals in post-secondary circus education in Quebec, Canada, specifically exploring how students, circus instructors, academic teachers and administrators value curricular elements within the context of their perceptions of their institution’s program objectives. The interdisciplinarity of circus studies invites analysis through methodologies and theories borrowed from other disciplines. From Sport Psychology I draw on models for assessing the kinaesthetic technical knowledge related to preparing an athletic body for elite performance (Bloom & Sosniak, 1985). The field of Curriculum Studies offers a lens through which to understand both the curricular models of each school and to assess the academic motivation of the students. The theoretical frameworks of hidden, null, implicit and explicit curricula provide a strong platform for investigating how circus schools communicate institutional values of subjects, student behaviour and career preparation (Apple & King, 1983; Eisner, 2002). In both post-secondary Quebec professionalizing circus programs, discussion groups of students, circus instructors, academic teachers and administrators were asked to define their institution’s program objectives and reflect upon the curricular content in light of those objectives. After reflection and analysis, it is apparent that the Quebec post-secondary circus education community has a common understanding of the learning objectives surrounding physical, artistic and vocational content, but disparate understandings of how academic content relates to the program objectives.

A phenomenology of youth circus training at Fern Street Circus

Ott, Doyle W.
Phoenix : Arizona State university, 2005

This dissertation examines the lived experience of circus training in a youth circus program from the perspective of the young recipients of such training. The author provides historical contexts for youth circus training, focusing on activity in the United States. Literature relating to youth circus training is reviewed, beginning with a brief consideration of the large number of works dealing with circus in general, followed by a review of the few scholarly and practical sources pertaining directly to the phenomenon of youth circus training. The author then goes on to employ qualitative methods to examine youth circus training at Fern Street Circus in San Diego, California, using data collected in interviews conducted with young participants in the Fern Street program. The results were transcribed, all statements given equal weight, and sorted for themes of meaning. Those themes that emerged in every interview became the basis for the phenomenological assertions in the findings. Multiple intelligences theory provided a conceptual framework for organizing these themes. The author conducted additional interviews late in the study to confirm and enrich findings. Themes that developed within the data include engagement with interpersonal relationships including friendships and family dynamics, developing a sense of self-identity, balancing risk taking and risk management, economic considerations, athletic physical development, and learning the aesthetics of circus performance. It is hoped that this rich set of ways in which the participants in the study reflected on their experience of youth circus training will support the rationales given by youth circus educators, and that this study will meaningfully add to the limited scholarly discourse regarding youth circus training. Enracinement sensible dans la pratique de cirque

Covez, Corinne

A guide to the study of the wellbeing effects of circus

Effective Circus Project ; Kekäläinen, Katri ; Kakko, Sofia-Charlotta
Tampere (Finland) : Effective Circus Project, 2013

This guide offers the actors in the social circus field the keys to the study and validation of the effects of the circus on wellbeing. The guide also explains how to collect information on these effects by using surveys and interviews, and for processing the information and compiling an information package without major investments in research. Any circus performer can easily collect at least a minimal amount of feedback. trained researchers can be asked for assistance when necessary.
The purpose of studying the impact of circus is to collect information in order to develop circus activity and to explain the significance of circus to its organisers and purchasers, for example the municipal sector. Impact study hopes to find answers to the following questions: how does social circus promote wellbeing? Why should social circus be organised?
In social circus everyone gets to practice and perform tricks and stunts. the attention is directed towards controlling the body and the equipment, on balance and movement. the atmosphere in the circus is encouraging and mistakes are expected. Participation in group activities with others creates community spirit and gives participants the confidence to perform. Social circus has many wellbeing effects, and it is important to make them visible. This guide for conducting research on a social circus can be modified to collect impact data also on other services. [editor summary]

Smile and style : an ethnographic analysis of ISU's Gamma Phi Circus

Carlson, Sarah
Outstanding Ethnographic Research Projects, 2012

Gamma Phi Circus of Illinois State University is the oldest collegiate circus in the United States, and one of only two still in existence. Founded in 1926 by Clifford “Pop” Horton, a gymnastics instructor, it began as a small group of men performing human pyramids and tumbling at sporting events. By 1931, it was an actively performing college circus troupe. Now, with a rich, 82 year performance history, Gamma Phi has roughly 70 performers and holds highly attended performances every April, in conjunction with a rigorous year-round practice schedule.

I chose to focus my research on Gamma Phi because they represent a strikingly visual and dynamic performance tradition. The performances that members create visually convey certain essential aspects of what it means to be a member of Gamma Phi. Members of the college circus share a set of goals, ethics, and characteristics which both create the culture of which they are a part, and qualify them as members. The information I gathered in collaboration with the members of Gamma Phi focused on the ways in which circus performance is learned and how that process helps Gamma Phi achieve its performance goals.
