This book explores an eminently human phenomenon: our capacity to engage with the possible, to go beyond what is present, visible, or given in our existence. Possibility studies are an emerging field of research including topics as diverse as creativity, imagination, innovation, anticipation, counterfactual thinking, wondering, serendipity, the future, social change, hope, agency, and utopia, among others. The present contribution to this wide field is represented by a sociocultural and pragmatist account of the possible grounded in the notions of difference, position, perspective, dialogue, action, and culture. Put simply, this theory proposes that our explorations of the possible are enabled by our human capacity to relate to the world from more than one position and perspective and to understand that any perspective we hold is, at all times, one among many. Such an account transcends the long-standing dichotomy between the possible and the real, a sterile separation that ends up portraying possibility as separate from and even opposed to reality. On the contrary, the theory of the possible advanced in this book goes back to this notion’s etymological roots (the Latin possibilis—“that can be done,” from posse—“to be able”) and considers it as both a precondition and outcome of human action and interaction. Exploring the possible doesn’t take place outside of or in addition to our experience of the world; rather, it infiltrates it from the start, infuses it with new meanings, and ends up transforming it altogether. This book aims to offer conceptual, methodological, and practical tools for all those interested in studying human possibility and cultivating it in education, the workplace, everyday life, and society.

The LGBT agenda for too long has been dominated by pragmatic issues like same-sex marriage and gays in the military. It has been stifled by this myopic focus on the present, which is short-sighted and assimilationist.

Cruising Utopia seeks to break the present stagnancy by cruising ahead. Drawing on the work of Ernst Bloch, José Esteban Muñoz recalls the queer past for guidance in presaging its future. He considers the work of seminal artists and writers such as Andy Warhol, LeRoi Jones, Frank O’Hara, Ray Johnson, Fred Herko, Samuel Delany, and Elizabeth Bishop, alongside contemporary performance and visual artists like Dynasty Handbag, My Barbarian, Luke Dowd, Tony Just, and Kevin McCarty in order to decipher the anticipatory illumination of art and its uncanny ability to open windows to the future.

In a startling repudiation of what the LGBT movement has held dear, Muñoz contends that queerness is instead a futurity bound phenomenon, a "not yet here" that critically engages pragmatic presentism. Part manifesto, part love-letter to the past and the future, Cruising Utopia argues that the here and now are not enough and issues an urgent call for the revivification of the queer political imagination.

Auteur de plusieurs ouvrages sur un sujet dont il est l’un des penseurs les plus accomplis, Christian Ruby établit ici une théorie du spectateur, philosophique et politique. Il déconstruit le préjugé selon lequel on serait spectateur « par nature ». Le concept lui--même est d’ailleurs daté et contextualisé : l’Occident moderne et contemporain ; cette figure est absente des cultures extra--?européennes ou a été importée sous la colonisation.

En prouvant que le concept de spectateur est historique et non « naturel », Christian Ruby met à mal un certain nombre d’évidences : des manières de faire normatives, une hiérarchie des spectateurs dans la hiérarchie des arts… Nous sommes désormais passés de la tradition classique du face-?à--face silencieux avec l’œuvre, du jugement de goût et d’une démocratie rêvant d’unité-?homogénéité, à un spectateur contemporain regardeur (selon Marcel Duchamp), participant, activateur, déambulateur, impliqué, etc., au nom de la démocratie pensée autrement.

Ce volume contient l’intégralité du texte des Mythologies et environ 120 illustrations. Parues en 1957, les Mythologies de Roland Barthes constituent un cas à part dans l’édition : depuis plus de cinquante ans, elles ont eu des centaines de milliers de lecteurs ; attachées à saisir une époque, elles n’ont pourtant pas pris une ride. Bref, les Mythologies sont désormais inscrites dans notre patrimoine littéraire.

Pourquoi illustrer les Mythologies ? Avant tout parce que leur objet est très souvent visuel. On sait l’intérêt que Barthes portait à la photographie. Son regard sur la presse ( Paris-Match, Elle ), la publicité, etc. est tout aussi omniprésent dans le livre. Ce volume entend donc donner à voir l’univers visuel de Barthes, le texte caché en quelque sorte. Le résultat est fort, surprenant, parfois drôle. [résumé de l'éditeur]
