Developmental movement for children : mainstream, special needs and pre-school

Sherborne, Veronica
Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 2001

Core text for the internationally renowned Sherborne children's developmental movement programme. A new forward and new resources listed. In this practical and thought-provoking book, Veronica Sherborne shows how developmental movement has a crucial role to play in the lives of all children. Central to her theory is the belief that relating to oneself and relating to other people are essential for the satisfactory development of us all. Developmental movement can be particularly beneficial to children with learning disabilities, children with physical disabilities, and children who are emotionally and behaviourly disturbed. The book offers practical help in understanding and meeting children's needs. It covers what to teach and why, and shows in detail - with the aid of marvellously expressive photographs - how to set about carrying out a planned programme of activities that are geared to the needs of specific groups. Performance, reference systems and strategies for balance training in Syndrome Down subjects beginning gymnastics

Popescu, Gabriel
Elsevier, 2014

This study aims at conceiving a strategic training and reference assessment system concerning the balance component, according to the diverse Special Olympics gymnasts’ potential. The experimental group includes 24 beginner gymnasts, within level A and level I.
Due to our practical experience and statistical confirmations, we believe that the mentioned evaluation system should comprise three general tests (Romberg Matorin, Unipodal test,), a specific test (the level A beam routine) and three reference technical tests (three side rolls towards left and three towards right with a stand lifting, maintained sat set square - execution, held side balance time-trial). Also, a specific adapted instructional content has been developed, so that this motor capacity should improve in a significant manner.[author summary]

Participation in physical activity for children with neurodevelopmental disorders

Arim, Rubab G. ; Findlay, Leanne C. ; Kohen, Dafna E.
Hindawi Publishing Corporation, 2012

The purpose of this study was to compare rates of participation for children (4–9 years of age) with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) with and without externalizing behavior problems (EBPs) with children without disability and to examine mediators of the relation between disability and physical activity participation. Data for this study were drawn from Cycle 7 (2006-07) of the Canadian National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (NLSCY). The frequency of children's participation in organized sports or physical activities varied depending on the child's health condition with children with NDDs and both NDDs and EBPs participating least in organized sports or physical activities followed by children with EBPs only. In contrast, there were no statistically significant differences by health group for children's participation in unorganized sports or physical activities. These differences remained even after controlling for the effects of other child and family sociodemographic characteristics, except for children with EBPs only. These findings highlight the importance of considering children's primary and other existing health conditions as well as family sociodemographic characteristics in order to better understand the factors that influence participation in organized physical activities for children with disabilities.[authors summary]
